The term petroglyph should not be mistaken for pictograph, a distinct and more sophisticated form of symbolic representation. While petroglyphs are typically carvings or engravings on rock surfaces, pictographs are painted images that often convey a narrative, weaving a chronological tale that unfolds across time. Unlike petroglyphs, which may depict isolated figures or motifs, pictographs employ a sequence of images to communicate complex stories, cultural beliefs, or historical events, serving as a visual chronicle of human experience through the ages.
