Taino Body Art

Natural pigment from annatto seeds, better known as achiote, has been long used as body paint for many indigenous cultures. The seeds were left to dry and harden in the sun and later crushed into a fine power that was mixed with water to extract its color.

The Tainos wore very little clothing because of the tropical climate they lived in, they commonly decorated their skin with body paint made from achiote seeds. These markings were common on the face, arms, legs, chest, and back.

To the right is a sample clay stamp used to decorate the skin. Geometric lines were also used on the face. The Taino Indians selected flat stones on which they engraved intricate patterns or made decorative clay stamps and made scratchings, parallel lines, circles, and other geometric patterns.
